5 Ways To Stay Focused When Gaming

It doesn’t matter if you are grinding out for some gear on World Of Warcraft, looking to get those gold camo guns on Call of Duty, or trying to beat Malenia on Elden Ring; staying focused during your gaming sessions is critical to performing well and peak enjoyment. Getting distracted can cost you hours of play on that final boss or ranked promotion. Focus alone does not just come from your concentration abilities; it also needs some preparation and the right mindset. Even the best of the best can face challenges when it comes to concentration levels, so here are 5 ways to stay focused when gaming.

1. Take A Break

Despite wanting to grind as much as you can and use all available time putting it into the game, there is an irony in how effective taking a break can be. Whether it is getting a good sleep to recharge your mind and body, consolidating memory and information processing, or using other break rules such as the 60/10 or the Pomodoro technique, taking regular breaks is important if you want to maintain focus throughout your gaming experience. Mental fatigue can quickly build up when gaming, especially when they are intense. Without taking regular breaks, you jeopardise your performance with slower reflexes and lax decision-making.  Using the 60/10 rule, which involves playing games for 60 minutes before taking a 10-minute break, or the Pomodoro technique, which involves intense focus for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break, can help gamers improve their focus. If these sorts of break rules are followed along with using the breaks to stretch, move, or rehydrate, you are likely to increase your overall performance.  Taking breaks from games doesn’t mean you need to do something completely different. Some gamers find it therapeutic to use their break times from the video games they are playing to engage in other gaming activities such as those offered on iGaming platforms. This could see gamers taking some time away from their immersive single-player game and instead focusing on trying to wager money on sweepstakes found at sweep-slots.net or on poker at the numerous platforms offering it. With such a vast array of different casino games to play online, there is something for everyone.

2. Create a Concentration Zone

Ensuring you are in the right environment whilst gaming is an important thing to consider to try and improve your focus. After all, your mindset is reflective of your physical environment. If you are gaming in a cluttered space, have distractions present, and are not comfortable, then your attention is going to be disrupted and cause your mind to drift, losing focus in the process.   Minimising background noise and distractions by using noise-cancelling headphones and turning off notifications on your phone is a great way to remain on task. This can also be combined with organizing your gaming space by managing cables, ensuring your monitor is at the right eye level and that your chair is comfortable.

3. Make Gaming Manageable

Managing your gaming experience may seem like overkill, but it can be an effective way to improve focus and your overall performance in the games that you are playing. Consistent routines, whether they are pre-game or during game, can provide structure and prime your mind for the gaming ahead. Some include stretching or visual exercises in their routine before they play; others give themselves a pep-talk to make sure they are in the right mindset. These sorts of routines can be incorporated into longer-term gaming plans where you have given yourself set goals, whether that be daily goals or bite-sized goals which have been broken into manageable amounts to make sure that you remain focused and interested in the task at hand. By breaking things down, you are more likely to stay locked into the task and achieve what you are aiming for.

4. Mental Meditation

Staying present and managing your breathing is undeniably going to help your mental performance. When we are under pressure, no matter what we are doing, our breathing tends to become shallow and reduce oxygen flow throughout the body to the brain. The less oxygen there is in the brain, the less cognitive functioning happens and the harder it is to focus or think clearly. By practicing mindfulness through breathing exercises and staying present in the moment, you are likely to train yourself to breathe more effectively, which in turn can enhance your mental performance. This is bound to help improve your gaming performance and focus.

5. Learn and Grow

One of the main things that can hinder your performance is your inner voice. All too often, this monologue can be our harshest critic. However, reducing the time you spend dwelling on past mistakes and aiming to remain positive in challenging situations is the best way to overcome this. This type of mindset shift may take some time to perfect, but the negativity you get from doubting your abilities is not going to serve you well. Instead, learning from your mistakes and putting different tactics into practice to overcome the current gaming challenges you are facing is a great way to remain content, present, and ultimately focused.
